Exploring People's Square and the Urban Planning Museum

Spring is making its appearance in Shanghai, thankfully. People's Square is a park at the center of town, and with its gardens is just beautiful now. The area is a great place to see and be seen.

Raniculus are used in alot of beds around Shanghai, as well as in highway boxes.

Looking forward to seeing all these cherry trees bloom next week!

People's Square is the location of some very cool buildings, including the Shanghai Opera House...

...and the Urban Planning Museum (which sounds awful but was really interesting).

The Urban Planning museum does feature lots of propaganda-like displays, sort of a rah, rah, aren't we great theme. For instance, a movie about the history of the city was playing, using real old black-and-white footage in the background while non-Asians acted out historic events in color in front.

Huge screen in the lobby played a video of local celebrities singing about Shanghai's attractiveness and success. "Let us grasp firmer..."

"The harbors never cease..."

The museum's main attraction is a scale model of the center of the metropolis, in which major buildings are in lights, and individual building are modeled on the real thing. The massive size of this was what was most impressive, though.

View from upper floor toward famous shopping area Nanjing Road. George Clooney is selling Omega watches everywhere in Shanghai.

And a view to the south, showing more of People's Square and the Shanghai Museum.

Allen was asked by several middle schoolers to pose with them at the museum, which he loved, and they were kind enough to return the favor. I got asked to pose as well by others.
